Security and web browser updates
Updates are crucial for safely browsing the web, but also for using our cloud systems. Browser vendors are constantly working on improving their software and counteracting against new threats.
Our recommended browsers are Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. But most importantly browsers should be updated frequently.
Automatic updates
Automatic updates should be enabled by default. But please take a minute to make sure you are using the latest.
To use automatic updates in Mozilla Firefox you need to:
- click on the menu bars (in the upper right corner) and choose "Options",
- scroll down to Firefox Updates section (or just type in "update" in the options filter),
- select "Automatically install updates".
To update Google Chrome you need to:
- click on the menu dots (in the upper right corner),
- choose menu "Help" and click on "About Google Chrome" item,
- if Chrome is not up to date a download should begin, if it is up to date there should be a message saying that.
Windows XP
We strongly discourage using Windows XP at all – it is considered obsolete and insecure. Note that Microsoft discontinued support for Windows XP more then 3 years ago (and the XP version is now more then 16 years old).
If you'd like to check your Windows version you can use a shortcut key – just press Windows + Pause keyboard buttons.
Changing Windows XP to a different system
It would be best to use a computer with latest Windows installed. It is possible however to use our cloud systems with a free operation system like Linux (for example Linux Mint, ZorinOS, Ubuntu or Debian).
Do note that installing Linux might require an assistance of IT professional. But after installation some Linux editions are quite simple to use and resemble or even mimic Windows look and feel.
Browser updates on Windows XP
We realize that changing or even updating an operating system might be time-consuming and expensive. To keep using our cloud systems on Windows XP you must at least update your browser.
At the time of writing the only browser still working (and receiving updates) on Windows XP is Firefox. Note that you need to have a specific version installed called Firefox ESR to receive updates. Installation is quite simple though:
- Choose and download Firefox ESR installer (you will most likely need the 32-bit version).
- Run downloaded installer.
- Follow instructions of the installer.
Please follow those steps even if you already have Firefox. Doing so you will make sure you use the latest possible version on Windows XP.
